Half a day: choose a clear priority

Start with a pre-booked museum slot and focus on a short list of galleries plus the Sistine Chapel. Afterwards, walk around to St. Peter’s Square and assess the Basilica queue. This is a planning outline, not a guarantee that both fit a fixed number of hours. If time is tight, prioritise the attraction that matters most.

A full day: add breathing room

Spend the morning in the Museums, then leave the complex for lunch. Continue to the Square and Basilica with a flexible afternoon. Add the dome only if you have the time and energy. Resist filling every gap: crowded corridors, security and finding an exit can take longer than a map suggests.

Reverse the order when useful

You can visit the Basilica first if current access and your museum slot make that sensible. Leave a generous interval before the timed admission, particularly if you add the dome. The public entrances are separate, so include the walk around the walls in your plan.

Make the final checks

Check official hours and closures, the dress code, ticket names and meeting points. Save confirmations offline. For children or limited mobility, reduce the number of stops and ask the venue about the accessible route. Choose accommodation based on the entrance you need first the following morning.
