Identify the underground site first

The Scavi visit beneath St. Peter’s Basilica is arranged through the Excavations Office. It is not the same as walking through the Vatican Grottoes, and it is not the museum-managed archaeological area of Via Triumphalis. A generic “Vatican tombs” title can hide that distinction.

Request the Scavi visit through the official office

The reservations page asks for participant names and number, preferred language, possible dates and contact details. The office assigns the time according to availability. A request is not a confirmed booking; wait for the office’s instructions before making a tight connection.

Read the confirmation before combining visits

Check participant eligibility, access rules, belongings and the assigned entrance directly with the office. Do not infer suitability from museum or Basilica accessibility information: an underground archaeological route is a separate environment.

Keep the surrounding day flexible

Choose either the Museums or another long visit as the main companion activity. If Scavi is the purpose of your day, build the itinerary around the confirmed time rather than treating it as an unscheduled extra.

Prepare a clear reservation request

List the number and names of visitors, requested language, possible dates and contact details as the official office instructs. Flexible dates are more useful than building a full day around a time that has not been offered. Keep the eventual confirmation with your travel documents.

Before committing other plans, confirm eligibility, entrance instructions and belongings rules for this specific underground visit. A Basilica or Museums ticket is not a substitute for the Scavi confirmation.
