A useful first stop
The Square is a good place to understand the relationship between the Basilica, the colonnades and the surrounding city. You do not normally need an attraction ticket simply to enter the Square. Event arrangements and security perimeters can change the route, so follow signs and staff directions.

Walk far enough from the façade to see the full composition. Bernini’s colonnades frame the space, with the obelisk at its centre. The perspective changes as you move around, so do not stop only at the end of Via della Conciliazione. Give yourself a few minutes to explore before joining an indoor queue.

Much of the Square is exposed to sun and weather. Bring sensible protection and shoes suitable for Rome’s paving. Agree a clear meeting point if your group separates. During crowded events it is harder to spot someone by a vague landmark such as near the columns.

The Basilica security route begins from the Square, while the Vatican Museums entrance is on the northern side of the walls. If your next booking is for the Museums, allow time to walk around rather than searching for a shortcut through the Basilica.
