Is the climb right for you?
The dome is a physical activity, not just another room in the Basilica. The upper route includes stairs and confined passages. Consider your comfort with heights, heat and narrow spaces. If those are a concern, the Square and Basilica offer a worthwhile visit without the climb.

An elevator can reduce part of the ascent, but it does not create a step-free route to the top. Ask the official visitor service about the current accessible areas if anyone in your group has limited mobility. Choose an option based on the route it actually covers, rather than the word lift alone.

Leave a separate allowance for security, ticket arrangements, the climb and descent. It is a poor choice immediately before a fixed museum admission unless you have a generous buffer. On hot days, consider your energy and bring only what you can carry comfortably.
