A simple warm-weather outfit

A loose, breathable top with sleeves and lightweight trousers or a below-knee skirt keeps the decision easy. Try sitting and walking up steps before leaving: a hem that looks long enough standing still may ride up.

Pack a light outer layer if you plan to change later. Comfortable shoes are a practical choice for long galleries, queues and stone surfaces; check whether your booked activity has any additional footwear restrictions.

Pack once for the whole route

Put the layer you need near the top of a small bag. Having suitable clothing buried beneath luggage is awkward at a busy entrance. A day that combines museums, a place of worship and outdoor walking needs a little flexibility, not a separate outfit for every stop.

Avoid these last-minute problems

Do not assume a ticket or a guided tour exempts you from the venue’s clothing rules. If travelling with children or a mixed group, share the requirements before the morning of the visit. The simplest solution is to arrive dressed appropriately rather than negotiate at the door.

If your day continues elsewhere in Rome

Pack your Vatican-appropriate layer even when the rest of the day is outdoors. Keep it accessible before joining an entrance line. If a tour sets a stricter clothing or footwear condition, follow the requirements for that selected booking.

Do not plan on buying a cover-up at the last moment or on one member of the party holding everyone’s belongings outside. Prepare together so the group can move through the arrival process together.
